The Atlantic Botanical Garden (Jardín Botánico Atlántico)
in Gijon is an open-air museum specialized in Atlantic vegetation with more than 30.000 plants in approximately 25 hectares. It is the ideal location to relax on your own or with the whole family, while enjoying the walks through signed trails, listening to the murmuring waters of river Peñafrancia, or appreciating the singing birds. The premises located at the outskirts of Gijon
near La Laboral. Design expands around four themed areas: Cantabrian Environment, Plant Factory, “La Isla” Garden and Atlantic Route
. Furthermore, two recently new areas are available: a maze and the American boreal forest. Besides, temporary exhibitions often display by the reception building.
This section includes forests, bushes, as well as meadows and marshes. The nearby La Laboral is the biggest building in Spain! It reflects beautifully on the ponds. The typical vegetation from the coast to high mountains is very diverse. It includes different types of fern, oak, beech, alder, and birch.
The area is showing different cultivated plants
for human consumption. There are many fruit trees, several orchards, as well as medicinal plants. Quintana de Rionda
is a group of several buildings typical of the Asturian countryside. Different exhibitions within those constructions include several mills. The rectangular shaped building over six stone pillars is a granary or “Panera
.” Such structures are instrumental in the countryside to store the harvest while protected from animals and humidity. Not less important, the cafeteria with covered terrace
is around the corner. Have a break at any time during the visit and enjoy some drinks and snacks with beautiful views!
The beautiful garden known as “La Isla”
goes back to the late 19th century
with over 100 years of history. It revolves around the romantic idea of gardens conceived as beautiful places to relax. Vegetation includes rather large trees to provide shade, a multitude of colorful flowers and even bonsai. There is a network of different signed paths to walk around. River Peñafrancia
delimits this section with its whispering waters.

Facilities are open all year

: the spring blossom, refreshing shades during summer, the changing colors during the fall

Getting to the Atlantic Botanical Garden
The address is Avenida del Jardin Botanico, 2230, 33203 Gijon and very near to La Laboral.
There is public transport with a dedicated stop at Jardin Botanico
using bus lines 1, 2 and 18 on a daily basis, or 26 during the weekend
