Wire born in London in 1976 emerging at the epicenter of the punk explosion. They kept a distance with that trend, resisting being labeled. So when the vast majority of punk groups became a caricature, they maintained a restless identity, based on experimentation and continuous metamorphosis.
Between 1977 and 1979, when they published their first three albums, they did not stop reinventing themselves: first, amphetamine rock with punk taken to its extremes, although with irony and abstraction; then they left behind that minimalism and became more atmospheric; with the third came the melodic phase. They have continued to release records until they reach fifteen, but only when the ideas that appeared seemed right to them. Not one of these as a filler.
That attitude has given them a bomb-proof longevity and irrefutable relevance. In 2013 they published “Change Becomes Us” (the title says it all): they entered the studio to record old songs that had only been released before in some live shows, that is from the early 80’s. They left with cuts that had found their place and intensity in the modern context, a declaration of intentions for their many post-punk students.
Two years later came “Wire“, whose title might suggest a kind of definitive statement of principles, although their subtle subversives had more to do with an update of their legacy (“Powerful and crunchy“: The Guardian). They released the following year the mini-album “Nocturnal Koreans” (“terrific, sounds defiantly modern“: The Quietus).
Finally, the most psychedelic of the reference bands of the first post-punk, and certainly one of the noisiest, an obvious reference of new metamorphoses of the genre such as Parquet Courts and Savages, was unveiled in 2017 with “Silver / Lead“, their 15th album, coinciding with their 40th anniversary as a formation.
